Well endowed with natural resources, Ghana has roughly twice the per capita output of the poorer countries in West Africa, according to the CIA World Factbook. Even so, Ghana remains heavily dependent on international financial and technical assistance. With 31.4% of the population below the direly extreme poverty line, there is still a great deal of need. S.C.A.D.C. recognizes this need by offering Youth Sponsorship Programs and Micro-Credit Grants. 1. People Living With HIV/AIDS ( PLWHA) Income Generation Project
![]() Since 2007 The Sankofa Center has conducted free rapid HIV/AIDS testing in our mobile outreach to communities throughout Ghana. Most discovering their HIV+ status do not have funds to treat opportunistic infections and advancing HIV disease. In response to this fact we have organized an income generation project for PLWHA. Those testing positive are placed in a program in which we sale African inspired items such as handbags, home accessories, and art pieces in the West with proceeds from the sale of these items supporting PLWHA found in our outreach. Rather than a handout, these products give dignity, hope, and self-reliance as our clients not only fund medications to fight opportunistic infections and life-saving Anti-Retro Viral drug regimes; but, the project provides families with sustaining income to assist our clients in living positively while positive! 2. Youth Sponsorship
![]() The magnitude of the world’s problems—poverty, war, natural disaster, and the associated dangers faced by millions of children—are too great for a single person to take on. With just a few dollars a month you can give a child access to healthy food, safe water, and an education. 3. Micro-Credit Grants
![]() This group of women produce & sell local foods and now have the funds to support their families Monthly sponsorship donations are used to support community wide programs and facilities that change lives and plant the seeds of self-sufficiency. To free individuals from poverty and dependency, small grants (often around $70 U.S.), are given to families in order to create self-sustaining small businesses.
